Feminist Theatre, an alternative theatre movement, gained popularity in the 1970s with the progression of the second wave feminist movement which followed the Civil Rights Movement. The movement was very political and desired to change the public ideas of gender roles and the importance of women in society Feminist theatre used many tactics of other political theatre movements and experimental theatre including guerrilla theatre techniques. The movement brought political attention; hover, did not do much for the benefit of black women and other minority females.
Although "Trifles" proceeds the second wave feminist movement, it does raise important topics concerning the role of women. Unlike most plays of feminist theatre, "Trifles" focuses less on a large political issue and more about the importance of women in society. Mr. Henderson's repeated comments about the Wright's untidy kitchen places emphasis on the significance of gender roles during this period. However, the roles of the women convey the message that women are hum more than housekeepers and that they too deal with significant situations,. Therefore, although "Trifles" does not assume the role of a traditional play within the feminist theatre realm, it does convey very important messages that are crucial to the ideals of feminists.
